Learn Japanese with Nihongo Sensei
The app that follows the order of your classes: the vocabulary from that lesson, not what an algorithm picked. 35 lessons: all of the first book and the start of the second. And you type the answers.
For iPhone and for Android: App Store Google Play

Nihongo Sensei now teaches you. Guided classes that follow the Minna no Nihongo lessons, with a story running through them: Nico and Noa, a brother and sister from Barcelona, arrive in Japan with their dogs Hachi and Goma, and every grammar point happens inside the story. Animated scenes, Japanese audio on every sentence, and exercises that check what you type. After each class, a practice on just that lesson; what you miss comes back in your review. The first classes are free.
Minna no Nihongo (“Japanese for everyone”) is the Japanese textbook used by many language schools around the world. It starts from zero and moves in short lessons: each one brings its vocabulary, one or two grammar points and sentences to use them.
The beginner level is two books and 50 lessons: 1 to 25 in the first, 26 to 50 in the second. Finishing them takes you roughly to level N4 of the JLPT, the best-known Japanese exam. The intermediate books come after.
Nihongo Sensei follows that order lesson by lesson: each lesson’s vocabulary with audio, its grammar explained with our own examples, and exercises where you type the answer. Today it reaches lesson 35; lessons 36 to 50 are on the way.
A red cross leaves you exactly where you were. Knowing you treated a Group I verb as if it were Group II leaves you with a rule — and with the other words that follow it.
And there’s a screen that tracks which rules you’re weak at, not which words you missed. That’s the thing you can actually fix.
The word plays, a gap opens for you to think, and the answer arrives. Forty minutes walking without taking the phone out.
Japanese in two voices and two speeds. Translations in Spanish and English. All of it recorded in advance and bundled inside: not one byte of network while you study.
What’s due today. Nothing else — which is why it gets done.
35 lessons with their vocabulary, grammar and sentences.
Vocabulary, kanji, kana and Listen, filtered however you like.
Kana and kanji to look things up. Nobody gets tested here.
The eight rooms where the real training happens.
Guided classes with a story, lesson by lesson, and a practice on just that lesson at the end.
You type the て, ない, た or dictionary form.
Is, is not, was, and how they sit before a noun.
The lesson’s pattern, with the verb in the form it asks for.
All of hiragana and katakana, and the pairs everyone confuses.
290 kanji to read and write, with spaced repetition.
You hear a word and write what you heard.
Including the readings that change: 300, 600, 800, 3000, 8000.
Five looks for the app; the newest, Yūgen: night, mist and lanterns. And this isn’t a mock-up: these buttons repaint this page with the app’s exact colours.
Try them. What you see is what you get.
Free: the vocabulary of all 35 lessons with audio, flashcards, quizzes, reviews, hiragana and katakana, and the first classes. What you pay for is what we built: the dojo, where you train until it comes out by itself, and the guided classes from 4 on. The first classes are yours to keep.
The full dojo, with all the classes, is €19.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial. No account and no surprise renewal: your store handles it.
Free: the vocabulary of all 35 lessons with audio, flashcards, quizzes, reviews, hiragana and katakana, and the first classes. I wrote it because I needed it: I study Japanese in a class, and the app I wanted didn’t exist.

By far one of the best apps I have used to study Japanese Very simple, no adds and lots of options for learning the writing system so great for beginners. It's also really helpful for people with some knowledge who want to test their understanding of grammar and sentence structure. It pairs with the Mina no Nihongo books which are really daunting for a new learner as 100% Japanese with no English. This app bridges the gap and explains things clearly. highly recommend.

Exactly the kind of study companion app I was looking for
I am learning Japanese while working full time and also a full time dad. I am unable to find time to practice, every app I find online seems to be doing random words with flash cards. This one is well organised for the Minna No Nihongo book which my Japanese class follows. I find this super helpful to revise, and learn specific to a particular MNN lesson. I can do it anytime I am free while I am travelling to work etc. I actually cannot believe this is free, no ads, no accounts. A gem of a find. Thank you again for building this app.

TranslatedHighly recommended · Very good app. I'm studying Japanese on my own and I've tried several apps for studying Japanese, and none of them has offered me so much variety, and for free. I hope you keep updating the app (for free, if possible) and adding more topics, classes and so on.

You tell it which lesson you’re on and it starts there. No pretending you know what came before.
